↓ We beg to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 27th ultimo, and to thank you for the copy, enclosed with the letter, of the Kemorandum on the subject of Hui Tsai in
Fong Kong.

* Our Committee begs leave to express to His Majesty's Government the intense repugnance with which a considerable section of public opinion views the lui Taai system of Hong
Kong, a feeling which we are confident the Nation will
share when it is realised that this system, affecting, as it
does, a very large number of girls and also boys, is, in all
material respects, a system of slave-owning and slave-trading.
3 Until His Majesty's Government issued its circular
upon this subject, we had not realised how large a number of
unfortunate children were purchased and held in bondage under
this system. In this circular the statement is made that
"practically every household in Hong Kong which can afford to
do so keeps one or more of these mui tsai."- a atatement which
implies a very widespread evil.

The facts attendant upon the mui teal system show
that cruelty of a gross kind towards these children does occur.
Quite recently a case was reported, in which a Chinese woman
was charged with assaulting har mul teal child. It was stated
